Stop Getting Distracted: The $40 Trillion Debt Crisis Nobody in Washington Wants to Fix
The Distraction Machine Is Running at Full Speed
I have had it. Truly had it. Lake Ontario is now Lake America. Canadian geese are getting Trump hair in meme posts. And somewhere in Washington, your elected officials are laughing while the national debt ticks past $40 trillion.
I refuse to keep covering this nonsense. Not because it isn’t entertaining, but because it is designed to be entertaining. Every over-the-top headline, every viral social media post, every manufactured controversy is a laser pointer. And too many Americans are chasing the red dot while the real problems go completely unaddressed.
This is how the game works. You get people emotionally activated over something ridiculous, and while they are busy arguing about it online, Congress quietly does nothing about the things that actually matter.
Congress Had the Chance and Did Nothing
Let me be crystal clear about what happened here, because I watched the Sunday shows and I heard Republican leadership talking about how serious they are about cutting spending. Here is what I know to be true:
- Republicans held the House, the Senate, and the presidency
- Spending cuts were on the table as recently as last August
- They chose not to pass them
- Elon Musk came in with DOGE and started making actual cuts
- Congress showed him the door because the cuts made their donors uncomfortable
Zip. Zero. Zilch. Nada. That is the legislative record on fiscal responsibility.
And now the same people who did nothing are going on television promising to fix it. I have heard this speech before. So have you.
The Real Problem Is Who Owns Washington
Here is the hard truth that nobody on those Sunday morning shows is going to tell you. Citizens United was one of the most destructive decisions ever handed down in this country. The moment you allowed unlimited money to flow into politics through Super PACs and lobbying operations, you effectively auctioned off the legislative process.
I have argued this point on Fox News with actual lobbyists who tried to tell me this is just the right to petition the government. That is what the founders intended, they said. Right. Because the founders definitely had in mind billion-dollar corporate interests funneling money through law firms to ensure that nothing inconvenient ever becomes policy.
Congress is bought. The presidency is bought. And until that changes, the following outcomes are essentially guaranteed:
- The debt will continue growing regardless of which party holds power
- Meaningful spending cuts will be proposed, celebrated, and quietly buried
- Voters will be handed a fresh round of distractions every election cycle
- Special interests will continue writing the rules they operate under
What This Means for Your Financial Future
As someone who has spent decades in finance and consumer advocacy, I can tell you that a $40 trillion debt is not an abstract political talking point. It is a structural threat to the purchasing power of your savings, the stability of interest rates, and the long-term solvency of programs millions of Americans depend on.
The bond market is watching. Foreign creditors are watching. And eventually, math does not care about distractions.
My advice is simple. Stop waiting for Washington to fix this. Build your financial plan around the assumption that the debt problem gets worse before it gets better. That means:
- Maintaining a diversified portfolio that accounts for inflationary pressure
- Being skeptical of any investment narrative that assumes political discipline in Washington
- Focusing on what you can control, which is your own savings rate, tax strategy, and risk exposure
The laser pointer is going to keep moving. The question is whether you are going to keep chasing it.
