The $5,000 Trump Check Promise: Why Your Wallet Should Be Skeptical
Another Check in the Mail? Don’t Hold Your Breath
I want you to think about something for a second. We’ve already been promised a $5,000 DOGE check, a $2,000 tariff dividend, and $1,000 checks from expiring ACA subsidies. Now we’re hearing about another $5,000 check if Republicans hold the House and Senate. My reaction? I have a better chance of suiting up as a middle linebacker for the New York Giants than any of these checks ever hitting your bank account.
This is not skepticism for the sake of it. This is basic arithmetic, and the numbers don’t work. Period.
The Math Washington Doesn’t Want You to Do
Let me lay this out clearly so there’s no confusion:
- Total tariff revenue collected that could theoretically be redistributed sits under $300 billion
- A $5,000 check to every American would cost between $1.3 and $1.5 trillion
- That gap, roughly $1 trillion or more, has to come from somewhere
- That somewhere is the printing press
Tariffs are a tax. They fluctuate. They get negotiated away. They get challenged in court. Building a permanent dividend program on top of tariff revenue is like building a house on a foundation of sand during hurricane season. The math simply does not support the promise.
The Inflation Lesson We Already Paid For
Here’s what gets me fired up. We already ran this experiment. During COVID-19, we handed out multiple rounds of checks. I went on radio program after radio program, mostly right-of-center shows, listening to people who called themselves conservatives absolutely clamoring for those government checks. Wanting more. Cheering for them.
And what happened next? Inflation. The kind that crushed middle-class families at the grocery store and the gas pump for years.
Now, was Biden responsible for that inflation? Yes, partly. But so was Trump. Both administrations printed money and handed it out. The political affiliation of the person signing the check doesn’t change the economic consequences of printing it.
If we print another $1.3 to $1.5 trillion:
- Inflation would spike well above 10% without question
- Every dollar in your savings account, your 401k cash position, your emergency fund would be worth significantly less
- The purchasing power you worked your entire career to build would erode
- The $5,000 check would be swallowed whole by rising prices before you even figured out how to spend it
The Political Reality Behind the Promise
Let’s be honest about what this actually is. This is a campaign promise designed to generate excitement. If it ever got remotely close to becoming legislation, and it won’t, there would obviously be income limits attached. The number would shrink. The eligibility rules would narrow. And you can bet politicians would find a way to tie the benefit to voting behavior, which, by the way, would be completely illegal.
This is the political equivalent of Oprah’s car giveaway. Everybody gets a car. Except nobody actually gets a car once the tax bill arrives.
What You Should Actually Do With This Information
Stop waiting for a government check to solve your financial problems. Here is what I know for certain:
- Government promises cost more than they deliver
- Printed money destroys purchasing power
- Inflation is a hidden tax that hits working and middle-class Americans the hardest
- The best check you’ll ever receive is the one you write yourself through disciplined saving and smart investing
My job is to cut through the noise and give you the reality. The reality here is simple. There is no $5,000 check coming. Plan accordingly.
