The President Is Selling Market Intelligence: What Every Investor Needs to Know
This Is Not Normal, and We Cannot Pretend It Is
I have been in this business for over thirty years. I have dealt with regulators, compliance officers, audits, disclosure requirements, and every kind of financial rule you can imagine. I run a registered firm. The SEC oversees my operation. I know what is required to stay on the up and up, and I do it, every single time.
So when I tell you that what is happening right now with Trump Media and Truth Social is industrial-sized corruption, I want you to understand that this is coming from someone who lives inside the compliance world every single day.
What Is Actually Happening
Here is the situation as plainly as I can put it. Donald Trump owns approximately 41 percent of Trump Media, the parent company of Truth Social. He posts on that platform constantly. Those posts move markets. Everyone knows it. The algorithms respond to his words in real time.
Now he has decided to sell access to those posts, ahead of the public, to institutional trading firms and anyone else willing to pay for them. That information is then fed into algorithmic trading systems so that buyers can position themselves before the rest of the market even sees the post.
Let me be direct about what that is:
- It is the monetization of presidential market influence
- It is selling information that moves markets before the public has access to it
- It is, by any reasonable definition, front-running
- It is inside information being sold by the sitting president of the United States
The Nancy Pelosi Comparison Is Instructive
We have gone after Nancy Pelosi on this program for her trading record. Her returns were suspicious, and the lack of accountability was infuriating. But imagine if she had gone on television and said, “Hi, I am Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House. Pay me and I will tell you what I am buying and selling before everyone else finds out.”
The country would have exploded. And rightfully so.
That is essentially what is happening here. The only difference is the platform and the title attached to the person doing it.
The Silence Is Deafening
What makes this worse is what is not happening:
- The SEC has said nothing publicly
- Republicans in Congress have said nothing
- Democrats seem too confused or too opportunistic to respond effectively
I have to wonder if some on the left are quietly thinking this could become a fundraising model for them too. Maybe the Nancy Pelosi trade-tracking service becomes a subscription product. I do not know. What I do know is that the silence from every institutional corner is stunning.
This Is a Pattern, Not an Anomaly
A recent piece in Reason by Matt Welch touched on something I have discussed on this program before. Presidential corruption is not new. The Marc Rich pardon under Clinton was a genuine scandal. Rich had circumvented trading rules, done business with sanctioned regimes including Iran, faced a potential life sentence, fled to Switzerland, and then received a pardon after his ex-wife donated over two million dollars to Democratic causes including the Clinton Library and Hillary Clinton’s Senate campaign.
Jimmy Carter called that pardon disgraceful. And he was right.
But at least that corruption had the decency to hide itself. What we are watching now is being done in the open, with no apology, and with no apparent consequence.
What This Means for Investors
Here is the practical reality for anyone managing a portfolio right now:
- Markets are being influenced by social media posts from the most powerful person in the world
- Institutional players with access to early information will always be ahead of retail investors in this environment
- The regulatory framework that is supposed to protect you appears unwilling or unable to act
- The playing field is not level, and pretending otherwise is dangerous
I am not saying pull out of markets. I am saying understand the environment you are operating in. Know that there are participants in these markets who have structural advantages that have nothing to do with research, fundamentals, or merit. That is the reality right now, and every investor deserves to know it.
